Climate Song „Restore/Rejesha“ with Lyrics from Kenya, Music from Switzerland

The lyrics were created in Kenya, the music was composed and recorded in Switzerland: Hot Stuff Climate Net proudly presents the climate song „Restore“ (or in Swahili „Rejesha“). It is a true international collaboration between Hot Stuff blogger Sylvia Nashipae Mosiany, who published the lyrics as a poem in February 2012, and the Swiss young adults Victoria, Miro and David from the Leonhard Gymnasium Basel.

And the Leonhard class went a step further: They sold copies of the song in Switzerland, gained 450 Swiss francs and donated it to Hot Stuff Climate Net. Thanks to them a climate education project in Kenya will be realized. The climate song inspires!

RESTORE (English; version in Swahili below)

There was a land, beneath the hills,
So rich and bushy green;
Where pines would dance
And cypress sang
So perfect and serene.

For those who lived upon this plain
Each day there was a feast;
For young and old and all alike,
Was plenty tables lain.

Days, months, then years went by
And people just forgot;
To care for our dear nature gold-
So she began to die.

The forest tunes
Became a clutter
Food was scarce
Then they all asked:
“What could be the matter?”

Today I live right in this shell,
I hope the past to restore
But this alone I cannot do;
I need your help and more.

If a tree I plant
And the sun you use
To cook and even light:
The day is soon
When beauty’s back
-Much to our delight!

REJESHA (Swahili)

Hapo zamani za zama, palikuwepo na nchi,
Yenye majani mabichi, yaliyoimba mziki,
Na kila kuwe upepo, miti nayo yalicheza,
Hapo bondeni papema, pa  utulivu amani.

Kwa wote wa  bara hili, kila siku kawa fisti,
Ya halua na pilau, sima pia kwa samaki,
Hakuwa nalo  kilio, eti ‘Mimi nina njaa”,
Kutoka kinywa cha mtoto, mzee au kijana.

Siku nazo kakimbia, kageuka kuwa miezi,
Na mwishowe kawa miaka, watu wakizisahau,
Mbinu za kuchunga nchi, basi badala kuishi,
Dhahabu lenye uzuri, likaanza kufifia.

 Nyimbo zile za msitu, zikaskika ni kelele,
Chakula kaadimika, heri maziwa ya kuku,
Watu baki jiuliza, nini hili lendelea?
Kumbe mwiba ulikuwa, ule wa kujichoma.

Mie leo ninaishi, katikati ya mabaki,
Ya bonde ile ya kale, na hata haikaliki,
Kurejesha siku zile, mimi nina azimia,
Ila pekee siwezi, nahitaji usaidizi.

 Mti nikipanda leo, ndugu utumie jua,
